Can this entire section of the rulebook be rewritten? I use the same method when assembling Cheapass boardgames. I have Paul Jaquays and Judges Guild to thank for that; I wish similar lessons might be imparted to today’s generation of gamers.

That sounds way waay too lethal for a game where the players are supposed to care about their characters. The bars to its cave are raised and lowered by a lever in Room Even a very inexperienced GM with a brand-new game system might reasonably think up that.

Bravely running away, we are told, is not “cool” and gaming is supposedly all about being cool. Gygax in particular seemed to delight in elaborate traps and situations likely to kill or at the least inconvenience characters. And that, coupled with the presentation in random determination tables, I think led to thrracia lot of people feeling somewhat straitjacketed by the rules, monsters, and items, when that tracia probably precisely the opposite of what was intended.
