Overall, I really enjoyed listening to this book. The creature then latches onto Alek and flees with him. When Wesgerfeld delivers Alek’s message to Volger, Deryn hears it, and Volger guesses that she is a girl from her reaction.

The most enjoyable parts of this book for me was the character development, Westerfield gives them room to westerveld, and even though he introduced several new supporting characters he makes sure to give plenty of page space to the main characters so that you never lose sight of who the story is focused on, or what their goals are. The behemoth destroys the Goeben and the Breslau in the strait, following the Leviathan as it attacks. There were quite a few scenes the book skipped that were mentioned as something that happened or was going to happen. The next day, the ship arrives at Istanbul. She’s a wonderfully strong character, barring one thing – which I’ll discuss later – and she only gets stronger.

Sep behenoth, Angela rated it really liked it Shelves: Deryn is still my favourite character and one of the most heroic characters I’ve come across, but I found myself appreciating Alek more here – the glimpses of compassion and maturity we got in Leviathan have provided solid ground to build on, and the development of his character is satisfying scktt believable as he comes into his own element.

The Leviathan arrives in Constantinople, a city where Clanker culture and Darwinst principles intersect in the most intriguing ways.

They then stage a revolt, using a gold bar Alek has saved for funding. Hirst, seeing this as an act of mutiny, attempts to interfere and tries to shoot Klopp with a compressed air pistol. He grasped her waist, sending a crackle across her skin.

And there’s an incredibly cute, and possibly creepy, new beastie tagging along with Deryn and Alek. Behemoth picks up where Leviathan left off with the main characters, Alek and Deryn arriving in the neutral territory of Constantinople on board the living airship Leviathan.
